Dr the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts was speaking at the Official Opening of the Barataria Community Centre on Tuesday 23rd February, 2016.

The Minister gave the keynote address where she acknowledged the 54 year history of the Barataria Community Council and the community’s legacy of success in the Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition. She also acknowledged the range of outstanding nationals who have come from the community including Former Member of Parliament, the late Kamaluddin Mohammed; Former Ministers, Joseph Ross and Ken Butcher; Mas designers, Cito Velasquez, Geraldo Vierra and Tico Skinner and Playwright and producer, Davlin Thomas.

The Minister continued, “I know for a fact that this space will become a principal hub for meeting the educational, cultural and recreational needs of this community.”

The new facility is equipped with two audio visual training rooms, a computer room, stage with changing rooms, fitness centre and is designed to accommodate easy access for the differently-abled.

In addition to the official opening of the facility, there was a glowing tribute to community stalwart Ms Elma Romano. The Vice President of the Barataria Community Council, Jameelah Phillips, highlighted the work of Ms Romano, who was the first secretary of the Barataria Community Council in 1962. The Barataria Community Council recognised Ms Romano’s commitment and persistence for the completion of the centre and announced that auditorium at the Centre was officially named in her honour – The Elma Agatha Romano Auditorium.

Also speaking at the Community Centre Opening were Vidiah Ramkhelawan – Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Community Development Culture and the Arts; Alderman Anthony Roberts – Chairman, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation and Joseph Ross – President, Barataria Community Council.

Community Centres Construction and Refurbishment is one of the programmes of the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts. The Barataria Community Centre is the fifth community centre opened by Minister Gadsby-Dolly since assuming office in since September 2015. She has commissioned centres at Bamboo #3; Gasparillo, Santa Cruz; North Manzanilla and Beetham Gardens.
