Finalist disqualified from the Lord Brynner Independence Calypso Competition
The Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism advises that calypsonian Brian London will not be performing at the finals of the 50th Anniversary of Independence Lord Brynner National Calypso Competition on August 25, 2012, due to his disqualification after he was found to be in violation of the competition’s rules.
Article 2, Rules and Guidelines, subsection (H) states:
Calypsos performed publicly before December 31st, 2012 shall not be eligible for this competition.
Mr. London entered the competition with a composition previously performed in 2010 by Ms. Eunice Peters in the TUCO National Preliminary Calypso Competition (Seniors). Although Mr. London’s entry bears a different title, the lyrics are the same as Ms. Peters’ offering.
While we regret Mr. London’s disqualification, the Ministry wishes to state categorically that contestants and judges must abide by all rules prescribed for the competition.
Saturday’s finalists are as follows: Chucky, Duane O’Connor, Heather Mac Intosh, Karen Eccles, Karene Asche, Kizzie Ruiz, Luta, Michelle Henry, Singing Sandra and Sugar Aloes, who was formerly the reserve contestant.
The Lord Brynner National Calypso Competition, held in collaboration with TUCO, will take place on Saturday August 25, 2012 at 8.00PM at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain. Tickets cost $50 and are available at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) box office.
