The Official Launch of SPICE MAS GRENADA 2013 & The Chartered Ferry 2013
Hosted by the Grenada Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Aviation
Friday April 12, 2013
Venue: The Water Taxi Terminal, Port of Spain
- Honourable Alexandra Otway-Noel, Grenada’s Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture
A warm Trinidad and Tobago Welcome to Officials from the Grenada Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture and other cultural officials. Congratulate the organisers for having the vision to launch SPICE MAS in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Chartered Ferry will ensure the continued and increased participation of Trinidad and Tobago nationals in Spice Mas 2013. The ferry will facilitate cultural dialogue, participation and increase understanding amongst the peoples of both nations.
Trinidad and Tobago Carnival has consistently attracted well over 40,000 visitors annually and brought in yearly revenue exceeding US$100 million. We therefore understand the potential of Carnival to boost the tourism sector and the creative industries while contributing significantly to the gross domestic product of the country.
There is immense opportunity for collaboration amongst all stakeholders involved in Carnival as the industry is now global. We must think and act global. We seek to raise our standard of international marketing and promotion of Carnival as a product. Collaboration is necessary in the following key areas:
- International Marketing and Branding
- Exchange of creative labour and expertise
- Research, documentation and archiving
- Policy and legislative strengthening
- Regional and International broadcasting and broadcast rights
All Trinidad and Tobago Nationals are encouraged to make full use of the chartered ferry service to Grenada for the SPICE MAS 2013.
PLEDGE OF CONTINUED SUPPORT: The Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism remains a committed partner in the future staging of the Grenada’s SPICE MAS.
Background on Grenada’s SPICE MAS
Date: August 12th and 13th 2013
‘Spice Mas’ climaxes during the second Monday and Tuesday in August annually. This event with multiple activities takes months of planning and coordination. Calypsonians, steel pan orchestras, beauty contestants, ‘fancy mas’ bands and others perform and parade to compete for Carnival honours. Many take on disguises in the costumes of ‘Shortknee’ and ‘Jab Jab’ players.
