Good evening.
It is my honour to welcome you to the performance of the Zhejiang Opera Troupe. This initiative is being staged in partnership with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. I must thank His Excellency Yang Youming, Chinese Ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and his hard working team at the Embassy for making this concert tour of Trinidad and Tobago possible. We at the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism are always ready and willing to welcome our Chinese brothers and sisters to facilitate cultural performances, exchanges and increase cultural dialogue.

As a multicultural society, Trinidad and Tobago prides itself in the knowledge that every creed and race has found an equal place in the rich and diverse cultural landscape.  Indeed, this concert performance by the Zhejiang Opera Troupe will serve as more than just entertainment. It will add to our knowledge and appreciation of cultural art forms. You would be pleased to know that the Zhejiang Opera Troupe is performing a Chinese theatrical genre that is over 400 years old. Ladies and Gentlemen, you are in for a truly magical experience.

The People’s Republic of China and Trinidad and Tobago have always maintained strong cultural relations. The staging of this concert series comes on the heels of the recently concluded Chinese Film Festival held at Movie Towne. The Chinese Government also generously offered 10 scholarships for deserving Trinidad and Tobago nationals to pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Degrees at selected universities in China. This scholarship programme is offered under the China-OAS Scholarship Programme and will certainly serve to strengthen cultural relations between both nations. This is evidence that our bond is strong.

In closing, I must once again thank His Excellency Yang Youming and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for making the performance of the Zhejiang Opera Troupe a reality. I look forward to hosting more cultural activities in the future as we seek to foster closer economic and cultural relations.

To you the audience, may your experience tonight be a rich and fulfilling one.

Thank you.
Enjoy the show.
